Structural steel is officially going up, marking an exciting visual milestone as the project begins to take shape vertically. The project remains on track for both budget and schedule, and sustainability performance is surging ahead of our initial targets.
Driven by a day-one commitment to waste reduction, our team salvaged, recycled, and repurposed materials from the original facility, pushing our waste diversion rate to 85%—well past our 75% goal. Thanks to these efforts, the project is now outpacing its original AEGB 4-star and LEED Gold targets and is on course to achieve an AEGB 5-star rating and LEED Platinum certification.

As shared in the Travis County Audubon Society article on August 25, 2026, Katy Zamesnik, Interim Director of the Austin Convention Center, and Riley Triggs, Lead Project Manager with the City of Austin’s Capital Delivery Services, share sustainable nature inclusions in the architectural plans including bird-friendly glass and glazing, lighting controls for migratory birds, native landscaping and habitat creation, and connection to the Waterloo Greenway.
As our redevelopment and expansion move forward, we’re prioritizing stronger outreach to the greater Austin community to share project updates and answer questions about UnconventionalATX. Through these efforts, we maintain transparency and strong relationships with community partners, stakeholders, businesses, and residents.
We were thrilled to have participated in the Diversity and Ethnic Chamber Alliance of Central Texas (DECA) 4th Annual Conference, Austin’s Commercial Local Council for the Urban Land Institute (ULI), five City Council town halls, the 4th Annual Austin Small Business Connections Conference, and Transit Forward’s Connecting Austin Family Fun Day. Since 2024, our team has been on the ground at 100+ community events across Austin.
We want to keep the conversation going! If you have an upcoming neighborhood meeting, community gathering, or industry event where you’d like the UnconventionalATX team to present or set up an information table, contact us to see how we can help.
Floor plans for the new Convention Center are now available. Check them out here.
Read about it in a recent press article: Austin Convention Center shares its floor plans, September 6, 2026, Austin Business Journal.
For future event information and booking, request a proposal and our team will happily reach out.
The $1.6 billion redevelopment and expansion is entirely funded by the Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT), a tax paid by people who stay at Austin hotels, Project Financing Zone revenues (a rebate of state HOT and sales taxes from hotels in a 3-mile radius around the Convention Center), and Convention Center revenues—not property taxes.
