Demo Is In Full Swing!

Construction Progress Since Closure

Since closing in April 2025, the Austin Convention Center site has been a hub of decommissioning and demolition activity. The JE 던 | 돌리는 사람 joint construction team quickly secured the area with perimeter fencing and launched full-scale demolition, starting with reclaiming, recycling, and removing repurposed materials. As excavators do their work, crews actively manage site access through designated gates, with equipment and trucks moving in and out daily.

Demolition began at the Red River loading dock area.

Demolition Milestones

  • Demolition began at the Red River loading dock area.

  • Debris hauling is underway, with trucks entering from Cesar Chavez and exiting via 4th Street.

  • Crews will remove the steel fire stairs on Red River starting in mid-June.

  • Structural demolition along Trinity Street is set to start in late June.

Walkways, Bike Lanes, and Traffic Updates

A covered pedestrian walkway along Cesar Chavez is complete. An alternate bike lane route will open shortly after the Hilton finishes its re-roofing project.

Parking Lot Prep and Grading

Work on the 4th Street and Red River parking lot will begin mid-June. The area will be fenced off as crews prepare for grading and other foundational work.

Convention Center History: Standing With the Community in Times of Crisis

The Austin Convention Center was more than a gathering space—it was a place where compassion and service shine brightest in the most challenging moments.

In 2005, as Hurricane Katrina uprooted lives across the Gulf Coast, the Convention Center opened its doors and heart, becoming a refuge for more than 4,000 evacuees. The Convention Center again stepped in to help coastal residents fleeing Hurricane Rita the same year. These moments marked the beginning of a deeper role centered on care, resilience, and connection.

During Hurricane Harvey in 2017, the Austin Convention Center served as a vital emergency shelter for displaced residents. It provided a safe and supportive environment, offering essential services such as meals, beverages, cots, showers, and laundry facilities to those in need.

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, the Convention Center transformed from an event venue into a place of healing and support. Set up as an Alternate Care Site, it stood ready to serve overflow hospital patients. Though the medical site was never activated, it was available for emergency logistics and coordination with Austin Public Health and other city, state, and federal partners.

Throughout the COVID challenges, the Austin Convention Center Department showed unwavering commitment. Staff logged over 18,000 volunteer hours, donated more than 10,500 pounds of food, and helped prepare over 32,000 meals for shelters and emergency teams. Through the Eating Apart Together initiative, staff packaged food for our unhoused neighbors. The center also hosted the Dell Face Shield Project, producing 10,000 shields for healthcare heroes, workers, and responders.

In February 2021, during Winter Storm Uri, the Austin Convention Center once again provided shelter as a warming center for residents without power or water during the deep freeze. Warmth, safety, and care filled the halls that typically echo with applause and excitement.

Whether welcoming world, national and local events, or caring for neighbors in need, the Austin Convention Center has a history of being a place where the community comes first, with a staff that is steadfast, supportive, and always ready to serve.
