The Austin Convention Center redevelopment and expansion reached a major milestone with the completion of the Design Development Phase in October 2025. The project is now in its final design stage, which will continue through 2026.

Construction continues to move forward, with structural demolition now complete and excavation underway into 2026. As of mid-December 2025, more than 293,000 cubic yards of soil have been removed—the equivalent of filling Barton Springs Pool 20 times—along with the removal of structural piers from the original facility. Crews have also begun construction of the diaphragm wall, the first permanent structural element supporting the expanded six-block footprint.

Sustainability is a top priority, and we’re on track to achieve LEED Certification. As part of the certification process, the work is focused on salvaging, recycling, and repurposing materials from the original facility that would have gone to the landfill.

Some highlights:

  • Structural steel is being evaluated for reuse to reduce waste and the need for new materials.
  • Pohl metal panels will be cleaned, restored, and reused.
  • Jamie Carpenter’s iconic blue art glass will be removed and stored until it’s repurposed in its new home.

These are just a few early steps toward meeting our ambitious sustainability goals—and we’re only getting started.

Stay tuned in to our progress
