Site Progress

The Austin Convention Center redevelopment and expansion reached major milestones, and as of June 2026 is on track to open in early 2029. The Design Development Phase completed in October 2025, which means the project is now in its final design stage, which will continue through 2026.

Construction continues to move forward, with structural demolition and construction of the diaphragm wall—the first permanent structural element supporting the expanded six-block footprint—now complete. The first and second cranes have been installed, and the third and final crane is being installed. Crews have begun pouring the foundation, work which will continue throughout 2026.

Excavation is 65% complete, and as of June 2026, 746,000 cubic yards of soil have been removed with 154,000 cubic yards to go. This is equivalent to filling the Texas Capital Dome from floor to ceiling 13 times.

Sustainability is a top priority, and we’re on track to achieve an AEGB 4-star rating and LEED Gold certification. As part of the certification process, the work focused on salvaging, recycling, and repurposing materials from the original facility that would have gone to the landfill. This commitment started on day one, allowing us to exceed our 75% waste diversion goal by salvaging materials from the original structure—currently at a 79% diversion rate.

Some highlights:

  • The Historic Trask House and Kitchen is being preserved and relocated into the future Convention Center campus and will become programmable space.
  • The use of smart, low-impact materials like mass timber and low-carbon concrete dramatically reduces embodied carbon.
  • A direct link to Waterloo Greenway’s 1.5-mile corridor further expands accessible green space and downtown connectivity.
  • Structural steel was evaluated for reuse to reduce waste and the need for new materials.
  • Pohl metal panels will be cleaned, restored, and reused.
  • Jamie Carpenter’s iconic blue art glass was removed and is being stored until it’s repurposed in its new home.

These are just a few early steps toward meeting our ambitious sustainability goals—and we’re only getting started.
