It brings hundreds of thousands of visitors for conventions, festivals, and live events. However, the former Convention Center lacked sufficient space to accommodate the growth in event demand, and created a barrier between east and west, with no ground level interaction for the local community and visitors. Therefore, after a decade of study, the Convention Center has begun the process of redeveloping and expanding its existing facility to provide a larger, more efficient facility that will open up the street grid and be a more active and pedestrian-friendly event space in the heart of downtown Austin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few key reasons why this redevelopment and expansion are essential for Austin\u2019s future:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to closure, the Convention Center was turning away nearly 50% of potential business due to limited space, costing the city millions in lost revenue.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With expanded capacity, Austin can meet current and future event demand, increase visitor spending, and grow local tax revenue. In fact, the completed project is estimated to generate over $285 million in additional economic impact for the city of Austin, and support more than 1,600 additional tourism-related jobs.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The redevelopment and expansion will help drive growth in Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT), which helps fund the Live Music Fund, Cultural Arts, and Historic Preservation activities in the city.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin is currently the No. 13 largest U.S. city, but the Convention Center ranks No. 61 in size.
